The series of “Light and Darkness” explores the theme of harmonious totality.

Light and darkness are interpreted as an opposition; light serves birth, joy, purity, happiness, and positivity, while darkness represents as a symbol of death, mystery, sorrow, chaos, and negativity. However, as if morning must come after night, both guarantee the existence of each other. In other words, both complete and enhance each other.

My paintings of the series “ Light and Darkness” were started to express the immeasurable joy of birth after the long labor pain and expanded to the idea of life and death from my personal experiences of loss.

I create narrative scenes where the oppositional elements mingle together placing emphasis on the dramatic contrast of symbolic forms: bright flames of fire or sparkling stars in the midnight and vibrant flowers, vivid cacti, and exuberant birds on or by skeletal and dried-out trees. The colorful haze of smoke and fire in my works is the key image to unify all the oppositional elements as a metaphor of the life cycle.
