Joanna Pilarczyk’s work is rooted in contemporary figurative painting, blending vibrant colour, bold pattern, and lush botanical elements to create portraits that are both intimate and socially engaged. Her technique—layering neon acrylics, oils, geometric motifs, and clean abstract shapes—brings an expressive, modern energy to traditional portraiture. Each composition is carefully built through intuitive mark-making and emotional dialogue with her models, resulting in paintings that radiate warmth, depth, and individuality.
Born in Poland and shaped by her early encounters with Western culture, Pilarczyk later found her artistic voice in London’s multicultural environment. The diverse community of North London, particularly Tottenham, became a vital source of inspiration. Here, she began painting the people around her—friends, acquaintances, and individuals whose stories reflect resilience, joy, and complexity.
Her recent work focuses on mixed-race couples, LGBTQ+ relationships, immigrants, and women of colour. Through open, reflective conversations with her sitters, she explores themes of identity, belonging, love, and the lived realities of marginalised communities. These dialogues inform her creative process and guide the emotional tone of each piece. The resulting portraits hold a sense of stillness and contemplation, capturing moments where her subjects can simply exist—resting, dreaming, or pausing away from the demands of daily life.
Pilarczyk’s practice also confronts the historical absence of Black bodies, queer relationships, and interracial couples in the fine-art canon. By placing
these figures at the centre of her compositions, she reclaims visual space for narratives often excluded or oversimplified in art history. Her paintings become acts of visibility and cultural affirmation, emphasising dignity, tenderness, and the beauty of human connection.
